Ahoy UBC Farm Friends!

The UBC Farm has been nominated for the Campusperks “Best Life” contest. With the help of Duncan McHugh from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems Learning Centre, we put together the short video below on a lushly rainy day at the farm. It highlights the experiences of our contest rep, Anelyse Weiler, with the UBC Farm community and features a few other familiar faces from our South Campus hub.  In addition to raising awareness about the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems and its innovative initiatives, the contest provides an opportunity to win some funding that would support the UBC Farm’s sustainability programming.

New UBC Farm Fundraising/Promotional video

Hello Friends of the Farm,

Check this out! The UBC central development office (ie: big time UBC fundraising) has put together a flash video about the farm and invited people to participate in visioning the farm’s future with them (and donate of course!). The Flash campaign is gaining momentum – we have just surpassed 1000 views of the video and the link was promoted on Edible Vancouver and CBC’s early edition with Fred Lee recently. Great Farm Trek rapidly approaching!

All of us Friends of the Farm are getting stoked for next Tuesday’s Great Farm Trek – music, huge puppets, tons of people – basically a big street party (family friendly) in celebration of the UBC Farm. We want ALL of you to join us, too, so remember to set aside Tuesday, April 7th on your calendars for some Farm-lovin’ time.

I’ve been remiss…

A few weeks ago, Jen Rashleigh completed work on the newest video documenting the importance of the UBC Farm. Jen produced and filmed the project over the past year, and the results are stupendous. I should have posted this earlier, but here it is now! Thank you so much to Jen, and Linda, also instrumental to the project, for the work that went into this.

Yesterday’s press conference, see it on Youtube

Yesterday marked the Friends of the Farm’s entry into the world of news media, as we held our first-ever press conference to announce the handover of over 16,000 signatures on our petition to save the Farm. Andrea Morgan and Matt Filipiak, along with others, met with UBC President Stephen Toope and Vice President Stephen Owen last night and presented them with a huge stack of petitions signed by UBC staff, students, faculty, and community members near and far. Each UBC administrator also received a homemade pumpkin pie, made with UBC Farm’s luscious Cinderella pumpkins.

Martin at Rocks and Water just posted about a video he uploaded of the 2nd half of yesterday’s press conference. Watch it below:

Here’s to hoping that the stack was big enough and the pies delicious enough to secure Toope and Owen’s support!

Guerrillas in Action

Andrea at HeavyPetal drew my attention to this video following Richard Reynolds, author of On Guerrilla Gardening, through the process of planning and executing an urban guerrilla operation. It’s quite an interesting insight into the work that goes into a public space makeover like this.
