Upon entering this course I had no idea what to expect. I had no prior farming or agricultural experience and I hadn’t been in school for over 10 years. Upon completing this course I have come to realize that farming is the most amazing and significant thing any one person can do to better the well being of themselves, their family, friends, community and the world. I have also witnessed that is a very dire time for farming and agriculture on a whole, UBC Farm is a prime example of this.
What we need right now is not more condo’s or vertical farms or condo’s that have been turned into farms but straight up old school farms. Land, dirt, bugs, trees, animals, sunlight… all that good stuff. And to reconnect communities with the faces and soils that their food comes from.
So with all that said, this is a time where action is needed. Not woulda, shoulda, coulda, but actually getting the job done. Apply to this apprenticeship program at UBC Farm, volunteer at the UBC Farm. If UBC is a little out of your way do some investigating. Call up Glen Valley Farm or Hazelmere Farm, apply to Santa Cruz or start up a community garden in your neighborhood.
Just get involved.
Thanks to all the amazing staff and community at the UBC Farm… it’s been a slice.
