As the harvest season is picking up, Southlands Heritage Farm in Vancouver really needs some volunteer help with its market garden! Specifically, they are looking for volunteers to assist with weeding, tying up and pruning tomatoes, and harvesting each Sunday morning for their farm market. Market Crew Orientations!Do you enjoy working in a fun, high energy environment? Are you enthusiastic about local produce? Do you want to get involved with the local food system? If so, consider volunteering at our Saturday Farm Markets. We have organized an orientation which will introduce interested folks to what volunteering at the market is all about. At the orientation you will learn the history of the markets, the different volunteering positions available and the basic skills to help your volunteer shifts run smoothly.
This orientation will also give you an opportunity to meet and mingle with other volunteers. We look forward to a great crew in 2011! *Please register for your session at one of the two links below.*
Volunteer orientations are a great chance to learn more about the Farm and various UBC Farm volunteer programs; discover which program piques your interest and how to get involved. We require all new volunteers to attend an orientation. Meet outside the Farm Centre (the building with the brown roof). No need to register, just show up for the session that works for you. Volunteer with FarmWonders Day Camp at the UBC Farm!
As a volunteer with FarmWonders you will gain experience and have fun while helping the UBC farm run a successful summer camp for children ages 6 to 11. You will learn about working with children, leadership and teaching, various skills and knowledge related to plants, the environment, science, technology, outdoors, food, etc.

All volunteers are required to complete a successful criminal records check. Camp begins July 6th and runs till August 28th. You may volunteer in one or more of the weeks.
We will need volunteers for:
Gardening Shifts: 9:30am – 12:00pm, Monday to Friday
All Day Shifts: 8:45am – 4:00pm, Monday to Friday
You will play an important role in the success of our summer camp. Some of the tasks you may expect to take on:
• Assist in set up and clean up.
• Provide support and extra direction to camp participants.
• Assist in leading games, crafts and activities.
• Actively participate in the program.

Welcome back old volunteers, and hello to all of you who are interested in coming out! We’re starting out by offering a drop-in session every Thursday afternoon from 1pm-5pm. More drop-in times will be added as we get farther into the season.
If you haven’t been involved in the past, please join us for an orientation.
The next orientation session is Thursday, May 14, 1pm – 2:30-ish

Remember to wear sturdy shoes and weather-appropriate clothing anytime you visit the Farm!

If you have experience with bees, have access to hives, and are interested in and enjoy the transfer of beekeeping knowledge then please see the attached documents about the Environmental Youth Alliance’s ‘Community Hive’ Sustainable Beekeeping Apprenticeship Program.
Also, if you have beekeeping equipment that you are not using, then please consider donating those unused materials to the EYA as we would like to provide start-up materials to the apprentices upon completion of the program.

We have an exciting week ahead of us! The Great Farm Trek is just around the corner and WE NEED VOLUNTEERS. If you’re interested in volunteering, please send an email to: greatfarmtrek@ams.ubc.ca with the phrase “I want to volunteer for the Trek!” in the subject line and state in the email body:
1. Who you are
2. When you are available (ie: all day the 7th, a few days before and day of, once a week for 2 hours until Trek, 3-6pm on day of)
3. Whether you have first aid or CPR training and what level (you will not be turned down if you do not have this)
4. Whether you have a car you are willing to use that day for hauling goods/people (I imagine the AMS can reimburse you for mileage, but I don’t know this for sure, so it’s best to ask).
Thanks for any help you can offer. Together we can make the Great Farm Trek an amazing event!

Jen Rashleigh, a friend of the Farm and the force behind the wonderful documentary about us, is looking for 2 volunteers with solid gardening experience to act as head growers for the gardens going in at the George Peatson Centre. This is a great opportunity for volunteering in the community if you’ve got some skills to share. If you’re interested, act quickly; the deadline for applications is February 10th.

The Friends of the Farm are pleased to offer another year of build-your-own scarecrows, this Saturday, 11am-4pm.
Bring your own out-grown and unloved clothes to re-purpose. We provide the wooden frames, twine, straw, extra material, supervision and warm drinks.
Last year’s event was a big success, and we’re hoping you’ll bring your little ones out and join us again this year!
Volunteers are also still needed for the event. Shifts are as follows:
10am-1pm: Set up before the start time at 11am, assist with scarecrow construction, serve hot drinks. (3-4 volunteers needed)
1pm-4:30pm: Assisting with the event, help with scarecrow making, serve hot drinks, and help with tidying up at the end, which will probably be minimal effort. (2-4 volunteers needed)
