It’s raining corn! Hallelujah!

Humidity is rising – Barometer’s getting low
According to all sources, the farm’s the place to go
Cause Friday from 3-8
Better get them gumboots worn
For the first time in FarmAde history
It’s gonna start raining corn

It’s Raining corn! Hallelujah! – It’s Raining corn! Blow the horn! I’m gonna go out to run and let myself get
Absolutely soaking wet!

(Thank you Weather Girls and Geri Halliwell)

Two important updates about FarmAde this Friday:

  1. This year, all of the sweet corn at FarmAde will be from ears grown right on site at the UBC Farm! In previous years, our maize yields have never been large enough to sell at FarmAde, but we have quite a healthy 2010 harvest. Yum!
  2. The weather forecast is calling for precipitation on Friday. However, the word on the street is that you’re not a true Vancouverite until you’ve danced to local music in the rain. We certainly wouldn’t want to deprive you of this foundational rite of passage, and thus, we’re fired for a gloriously Vancouverish, rainy FarmAde!  We might even have prizes for the best photos of people kicking up their heels up at FarmAde in the rain.

Please dress appropriately, especially if you’re bringing younger Farm Friends.   See you on Friday!

Thanks, Environment Canada, “Snowfall warning continued” is just what I wanted to hear on a dreary Wednesday. So the forecast has been cast, fine, but I am fairly certain that if I ignore the warning it will never materialize.

Just in case we get a few feet in the next few hours I ran outside and braved the sideways rain to bring you – yes you! – this dose of farm shots.

Nov. 12th – Wednesday Walkabout

Sorry about the absence of the Wednesday Walkabout for the past few weeks. We’ve been busy! But we’re back and better than ever, with autumnal sights for your viewing pleasure. Enjoy!

(Any help with identification is welcome.)

Landed learning kids in their slickers

Mucky out there, isn’t it? We’re all hiding in the office this morning, but we’ve made a pact to brave the outdoors this afternoon for a brassica harvest. If you thought Farm employees were braver than this, you were mistaken. In fact it’s quite within our nature to choose tea and computers over wet socks and cold hands. We do know that the work needs to be done eventually, and we are brave enough to own up to that. But first, maybe I’ll have just one last cup of tea…

News for today:

  • Our Thursday evening volunteer shift is being discontinued – effective TODAY! It’s getting dark much earlier now and today’s sogginess is serving as impetus for the cancellation. Our schedule now looks like so:
    • Thursdays: 1:30-5pm (evening shift discontinued for the season)
    • Fridays: 9:30am-12:30pm and 1:30-5:00pm
    • Saturdays 9:30am-12:30pm
  • UBC Photo Society has issued a call out for your best Farmade 2009 photos. They will be holding a photo show in Sprouts, the natural food co-op on campus, and want your photos to be included. The photos will be sold by donation, with all proceeds going to the Farm. If you’re attending tomorrow’s gonzo-good time-party that is Farmade, take a few moments to capture them good times on film to help support our work. More details here.

Enjoy the drizzle, folks…
