Energy and support from the community serves to inspire much of the work that we do at the farm. We were thrilled to welcome over 1000 people to this year’s FarmAde celebration on September 16! For many folks, it was their first time visiting the UBC Farm and learning about our sustainability programming.

Hats off to Nancy Toogood for launching FarmAde for the ninth year in a row despite her intensely demanding role as the AMS Food & Beverage Manager. FarmAde was made possible in large part due to the generous support of the AMS, Student Care, the University Neighbourhoods Association and UBC Transportation Planning. Warm, special gratitude to Margaret Bloomquist for being our FarmAde Volunteer Coordinator extroardinaire.

This year, we’re excited to feature:

  • Vegan, vegetarian and local, free-range beef burgers
  • Smoothies & juice from The Juice Caboose (organic, vegan, gluten free and soy free)
  • Farm-fresh corn and organic UBC Farm veggies
  • Organic, fair trade baked goods from Sprouts (vegan options)
  • A beverage garden featuring handcrafted brew from East Van’s Storm Brewing

Many thanks to the generous support of the Alma Mater Society, Student Care, University Neighbourhoods Association, and UBC Transportation Planning. Looking forward to seeing you this Friday!

Ahoy UBC Farm Friends!

The UBC Farm has been nominated for the Campusperks “Best Life” contest. With the help of Duncan McHugh from the Faculty of Land and Food Systems Learning Centre, we put together the short video below on a lushly rainy day at the farm. It highlights the experiences of our contest rep, Anelyse Weiler, with the UBC Farm community and features a few other familiar faces from our South Campus hub.  In addition to raising awareness about the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems and its innovative initiatives, the contest provides an opportunity to win some funding that would support the UBC Farm’s sustainability programming.

Although we have embedded the video in this post just for fun, please take the time to visit the clip on the contest website at this link.  Once you register your email address, you can vote for the clip every day until January 20th.  Please share the contest website link with anyone that you think would be interested (e.g. email, Facebook, Twitter, etc.).  Many thanks for your support!

Thanks to everyone who cheered for Friends of the UBC Farm at the Point Grey Fiesta Parade last Saturday!  It was a beautiful day for dressing up in our finest costumes, several of which were kindly loaned by the UBC Sustainability Office.  Our troupe included a pod of peas, bunch of grapes, honey bee, cob of corn and some friendly farmers.  Hats off to the Point Grey Fiesta Committee for organizing such a great community event.  Photo contributions courtesy of Agnieszka and Julia.

Sowing Seeds field trip to Salt Spring, June 2009*

Sowing Seeds field trip to Salt Spring, June 2009*

For the 2008 and 2009 growing seasons, the Centre for Sustainable Food Systems at UBC Farm has been pleased to offer “Sowing Seeds,” a hands-on, season-long apprenticeship-style course in sustainable agriculture. Our second year of the program began in early March 2009 and completes early November 2009.

Now, after two full seasons, Sowing Seeds 2010 is under revision as we consider feedback from our 2008 and 2009 apprentices, our UBC Farm Staff and our Steering Committee.  We believe this evaluation is a critical step in the creation of an excellent program, and we are excited about the continued evolution of Sowing Seeds.  The 2010 course details (including course schedule, dates, fees and application information) will be available on our website shortly. Updated info will also be available at the Open House on Oct 31.  We hope to see you there!
